Trumpington Park Primary School, Hobson Avenue, Trumpington, Cambridgeshire
This project was to assess the construction of a new school which formed part of a large mixed development scheme on the outskirts of Cambridge. A planning condition required that the school achieved a BREEAM rating of Very Good.
The school is to serve a a substantial area of new housing, most of which was constructed simultaneously. From an assessment viewpoint the challenge was to separate the actions taken for the school from those associated with the rest of the site. This was particularly the case for management and waste issues. In addition, the strategies developed for ecology and surface water management were site wide so an assessment of the extent to which these strategies applied to the school was required.
The school achieved the Very Good rating required at Post Construction stage scoring very well in energy, benefiting from a good thermal envelope and the installation of a substantial solar PV array, transport, with the addition of new public transport systems to serve the new neighbourhood, materials with most elements scoring well in the Green Guide to Specification, and pollution, with a particularly comprehensive approach to the management of surface water run-off.
